The Advantages and Disadvantages of Autodesk Maya. Autodesk Maya 3d modeling and animation software is extremely powerful and is used by big budget.
You just might have started learning animation in Blender, and might be wondering that if Blender is better than Maya or vice versa.. If so, you’re at the right place! Because in this post, we’ll take a quick look at both softwares’ features, and talk about their advantages and disadvantages over each other! If you’re ready, let’s get started!
What are the cons and pros of using Blender against Maya?
Blender is a free 3D package. Do you want to create and sell something with it? Sure. Just download it from blender.org and let your journey begin. You want to do the same thing with other 3D softwares? Check the license first, and pay the fee for it.
Both Maya and Blender come with a great plugin support. The only difference is that, Blender has the advantage of being a community driven software therefore most of the plugins made for it are free. Most of Maya plugins are paid.
Blender boots up faster than Maya. (Blender takes a few seconds to boot up, while Maya takes up to a minute.)
Blender takes the sweet power of being an open source software, and give you the full control over it. Meaning of, you can customize Blender however you like. Maya gives you some customization options, but they’re limited.
While Maya relies on navigating through menus and clicking things to achieve/activate stuff, Blender is completely relies on shortcuts. This does not mean that you can not use Blender without learning its shortcuts, but doing it so becomes a tedious task after a while. In Blender, there is a shortcut for everything that can make your workflow a lot faster. However, Maya has a cleaner interface. It is easier to navigate through between menus in Maya. With the release of Blender 2.8, the foundation made great improvements over UI, but relatively, Maya still offers a better interface. Even with the improvements made, it still gets confusing to find what you're looking in Blender time to time.
Blender gets updated constantly, and it does a better job than Maya overall when it comes to bringing new & important features to the table.
- Blender has a bigger online community. Getting an answer to your question is easier.
- Maya offers better integration with other third party softwares.
- Maya offers a faster animation workflow.
- Maya can handle heavy scenes better than Blender.
- Blender is not industry standard. If you know Maya, it’s easier to find a job in the industry.
- Blender 2.8 comes with real time render engine.
My opinion is that, if you’re a freelancer, or just got curious about 3D, start learning Blender. If your priority is getting a job in the game industry, go with Maya. I’m saying game industry because in the recent years, Blender has become widely used in the movie industry. If you’d like to know about it more, please let me know in the comment section. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. Other than that, whether it be Maya or Blender, keep learning!
