What different versions of Total War: WARHAMMER are there?

Total War: WARHAMMER will be available in the standard edition, Limited Edition and the extremely rare High King Edition. In addition, February 2017 will see the release of the Old World Edition.

OLD WORLD EDITION FAQ

In February 2017 we will be releasing a new edition of Total War: WARHAMMER with selected high street retailers. The big news is that it comes with a new playable race – Bretonnia. Why should you care if you already own Total War: WARHAMMER? Because you can download the Bretonnia Race Pack for free then too!

A contrast of lowly peasant masses and proud knightly orders, the feudal kingdom of Bretonnia features a host of powerful units and is lead into battle by a choice of three playable Legendary Lords; King Louen Leoncoeur, Alberic of Bordeleaux and the Fay Enchantress. More details about this iconic Warhammer Fantasy Battles Race will be revealed in the new year.

We’ve answered some of the most likely questions below.

What’s in the Total War: WARHAMMER – Old World Edition?It is the original game, plus the Bretonnia Race Pack and an exclusive novella, ‘The Prince of Altdorf’ by Total War Writer Andy Hall.

Does it come with all the DLC? Is it a GoTY or Gold version?No, it’s the original game and the Bretonnia Race Pack, and all the free-LC we’ve released to date of course. There are no plans to release a Gold or GoTY version of the game currently.

Why are you releasing this Edition?It’s a great opportunity to mark the inclusion of a great and iconic Warhammer Fantasy Battles race, and a great point for anyone who hasn’t dived into the Total War: WARHAMMER game yet to get on board.

What will existing players get?If you already own Total War: WARHAMMER, your game will be updated, and you will see the Bretonnia Race Pack available for free download in the Steam store. However, ‘The Prince of Altdorf’ novella is only available with physical copies of the game.

You said Bretonnia was coming this year, why is it delayed till February?As we mentioned at the time, our free content plan is subject to change, and we took the opportunity of repackaging the game to add in more content for Bretonnia, with additional units and a third Legendary Lord for example.

Is anymore DLC coming for Total War: WARHAMMER?Yes, our next major DLC expansion, and the next Free-LC is due before Christmas. It is growing now, there will be more news soon.

What are the differences between these editions?

The High King Edition is modelled on the legendary Book of Grudges, and will ship in a large ornate presentation box, featuring metallic gold and 3D sculpted detail in the iconic Dwarfen style. Chaos Warrior DLC for Total War: WARHAMMER, Now Free Week One

We’d like to announce that the Chaos Warriors Race pack will now be offered free to players who purchase Total War: WARHAMMER in the first week on sale, as well as if you pre-order.

By extending the free period deadline by a week past launch, we can make sure more people who don’t feel like pre-ordering don’t miss out.

But at the same time we still get to reward early adopters, who’s support is so valuable to us.

Retailers who are currently supporting the pre-order will continue offering the DLC for free into the first week, with the free period coming to an end at 18:00 BST on the 31st May.

What’s a ‘participating retailer’?Any retailer that is already offering the Chaos Warriors Race Pack as a Pre-order will also be making it available for free to people who buy the game during the first week on sale. You should always check with your preferred retailer to make sure though.

Does this affect the contents of the Collector’s Edition?No, the Chaos Warriors will still be included in that Edition.

When will the free Chaos Warrior Race Pack offer end?At 18:00 BST on the 31st May 2016.

Has the release date for the game changed?No, the game will still release on the 24th May 2016.

Will reviews still come out before launch?Yes, absolutely, we will be able to tell you when soon.

Will there be preloading for the title on Steam?Yes there will, we will be able to announce when shortly.

Alongside the extremely rare High King Edition, a Limited Edition will also be available at select retailers. This version includes the metal case and the Insider Guide detailed above in the High King Edition.

The Standard Edition contains the main game only.

All pre-orders of the Standard or Limited Edition from participating retailers will include the Chaos Warriors Race Pack.

Update: It’s official! Krell is now live in Total War: Warhammer and he can be summoned into battle for free. The patch is live now and contains only Krell.

Creative Assembly also revealed that he is, in fact, the ‘old friend’ they’ve been teasing. I wish I had an old friend who could murder 20 people in a single swing.

Original Story:A DLC entry titled Total War: Warhammer – Krell has appeared in the game’s Steam database, strongly suggesting that the former Chaos champion-turned-Wight will be making an appearance in Creative Assembly’s fantasy strategy game.

Here’s the DLC listing for Total War: Warhammer at SteamDB, and here’s Krell’s page.

Neither gives much away other than to suggest that Krell is coming. Needless to say, following the link out to Steam just bumps you back to the store front.

Krell is one of the oldest characters in the Warhammer tabletop game – both in its fictional lore and in the real world. He was once a Chaos Lord dedicated to Khorne, and killed a lot of Dwarfs before eventually meeting his comeuppance. He was resurrected by the big bad necromancer Nagash as a powerful Wight, then fell into the service of Heinrich Kemmler, the Lichemaster. Expect him to join the Vampire Counts faction, to buff Wight units, and to have some kind of interplay with Kemmler.

The question now is how he fits with Creative Assembly’s content plan. Speculation on the Total War subreddit is rife that Krell is the ‘Old Friend’ listed as the terminus of CA’s free DLC schedule, and ostensibly, he would fit: Krell’s first appearance was alongside Heinrich Kemmler in the 2nd edition campaign ‘Terror of the Lichemaster’ from 1986, which certainly makes him old.

However, even though he’s usually a hero in the tabletop game, Krell would almost certainly be a Legendary Lord in Total War given that he’ll need his own magic items and skill trees to do him justice. And, according to community manager Grace, the Old Friend is “just a cool, tiny little thing we thought everyone would like to see, but it’s not a faction or a Legendary Lord.”

In the thread associated with this leak, community manager Bart reiterates that point: “think Blood Knight level, kind of small addition thing, not any hero or lord stuff… bear with us but moderate those expectations.”

So it seems Krell is not our old friend and thus may or may not be free DLC. But it’s pretty likely he’s coming, either way, so that’s good news.
